- ARREST Trial: Early ECMO-facilitated resuscitation for patients with OHCA and refractory ventricular fibrillation significantly improved survival to hospital discharge compared with standard ACLS treatment.
- Prague OHCA Trial: Among patients with refractory out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, the bundle of early intra-arrest transport, extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and invasive assessment and treatment did not significantly improve survival with neurologically favorable outcome at 180 days compared with standard resuscitation, although the trial was possibly underpowered to detect a clinically relevant difference.
- INCEPTION Trial: In patients with refractory out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, extracorporeal CPR and conventional CPR had similar effects on survival with a favorable neurologic outcome.

VA ECMO
- ECLS SHOCK Trial: In patients with acute myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock with planned early revascularization, the risk of death from any cause at the 30-day follow-up was not lower among the patients who received ECLS therapy than among those who received medical therapy alone.
VV ECMO

- CESAR Trial: We recommend transferring of adult patients with severe but potentially reversible respiratory failure, whose Murray score exceeds 3·0 or who have a pH of less than 7·20 on optimum conventional management, to a centre with an ECMO-based management protocol to significantly improve survival without severe disability.
- EOLIA Trial: Among patients with very severe ARDS, 60-day mortality was not significantly lower with ECMO than with a strategy of conventional mechanical ventilation that included ECMO as rescue therapy

- Venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in patients with traumatic brain injuries and severe respiratory failure: A single-center retrospective analysis: In this series, the majority of TBI patients survived and had good neurologic outcomes despite a low admission Glasgow Coma Scale. Venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation may minimize secondary brain injury and may be considered in select patients with TBI.
